E3 High limit or rollout limit open
What the control is telling you
The primary limit, auxiliary limit or a rollout limit is open. The blower keeps running and the burners stay off. ComfortNet thermostat shows HIGH LIMIT OPEN E3.
Applies to: GMVC95/AMVC95 upflow and *CVC9 counterflow two-stage furnaces
Likely causes
- Low airflow over the heat exchanger: dirty filter, restricted ducts, wrong blower speed, failed blower motor
- Flame rollout from misaligned burners, a blocked vent or intake, or a failed inducer
- Loose or wrong wiring
Test and repair steps
- Safety turn power off before working on the control or wiring.
- Check the filter and duct system first. Clean or replace the filter and open any closed registers.
- Check the blower speed setting and motor. Temperature rise must be inside the rating plate range.
- Rollout limits are manual reset. If one tripped, find out why before you reset it: check burner alignment, vent and intake pipes, and the inducer.
- The auxiliary limits near the blower are also manual reset.
- Tighten or fix any loose limit wiring.
