Venting rules for intake and exhaust placement
What is going on
Basic placement rules for the air intake and exhaust terminations. Check the clearance table as well.
Check in this order
- Keep the terminal away from normal prevailing winds.
- Draw combustion air only from an area free of dust and chemicals such as chloride, fluoride, bromine or iodine. Contaminated air damages the heat exchanger and voids the warranty.
- Keep the exhaust outlet 8 in to 24 in above the combustion air intake.
- Keep the combustion air intake at least 12 in plus expected snow depth above any surface that can hold snow.
- Keep the intake and exhaust at least 6 in center to center horizontally.
- Do not terminate the vent over public walkways, near soffit vents, crawl spaces, or where condensate or vapour could cause a hazard or damage.
- Do not terminate over driveways or parking lots, where condensate can freeze and create a slip hazard or damage vehicles.
- Sidewall venting may not be the preferred option because of moisture build-up on the exterior wall.
- Direct vent wall thickness must be between 1 in and 50 in (as printed in the manual).
- Never use an existing chimney or chase-way for venting or combustion air.
Applies to: Direct vent intake and exhaust terminations

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority. HVACopedia is not affiliated with any manufacturer; brand and model names only identify the equipment.
