Cleaning the combustion side of the heat exchanger
What is going on
Annual service or when combustion readings drift, flue temperature climbs or Loc 16 appears.
Likely causes
- Deposits between the heat exchanger tubes
- Dirty electrodes
- Damaged refractory
Check in this order
- Remove the heat demand, let post-purge finish, shut off gas and power.
- Swing the control panel aside; unplug the fan, gas valve and both electrodes. Unthread the gas valve inlet union (keep the fibre washer).
- When cool, remove the four nuts holding the burner assembly and lift it out without damaging the refractory disc behind the door.
- Check the electrodes; clean with steel wool if needed. Ignition gap is 4.5 mm.
- Protect the rear refractory from water; replace it if damaged.
- Vacuum loose debris, remove the condensate trap and put a drain under the boiler.
- Wet the chamber with warm water only and rinse between the tubes with a hose until the water runs clear. Keep electrical parts dry.
- Clean and reassemble the condensate trap, then reassemble the boiler. Replace any gasket that shows damage; the silicone burner door gasket is due every two years.
- Run a combustion analysis afterwards.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
