Removing an existing boiler from a common venting system

C95C140

What is going on

Use this procedure for each boiler that stays on a common vent after another boiler is removed. The remaining venting is usually too large and must be resized.

Check in this order

  1. Shut down all boilers on the common venting system before starting.
  2. Seal any unused openings in the common vent.
  3. Check the venting for correct size, horizontal pitch, blockage, restriction, leakage, corrosion and other faults.
  4. Close building doors and windows. Run clothes dryers, exhaust fans and other non-vented appliances. Set exhaust fans to maximum. Close fireplace dampers.
  5. Start the remaining appliance and run it continuously.
  6. Test for spillage at the draft hood relief opening after 5 minutes of main burner operation using a match, candle or smoke.
  7. If the appliance vents correctly, restore doors, windows, fans, dampers and other appliances to normal use.
  8. Correct any improper operation and resize the common vent to approach the minimum size in the National Fuel Gas Code tables (Chapter 13) or CAN/CSA B149.1.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
