Venting system check before placing an appliance back in service
What is going on
Used when other gas appliances share the venting system. Test each appliance one at a time while the others are off.
Check in this order
- Seal any unused openings in the venting system.
- Check venting for correct size, horizontal pitch, blockage, restriction, leakage, corrosion and other faults that could cause an unsafe condition.
- Close building doors and windows and doors between the appliance space and the rest of the building.
- Close fireplace dampers.
- Start clothes dryers and any appliance not on the venting system. Run exhaust fans such as range hoods and bathroom fans at maximum speed. Do not run a summer exhaust fan.
- Light the appliance per its lighting instructions and set the thermostat so it runs continuously.
- Check that the appliance vents properly. If it does not, correct the venting per the National Fuel Gas Code and CAN/CGA B149.1.
- After testing, return doors, windows, fans, dampers and other gas appliances to their original condition.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
