Stainless steel vent fitting installation
What is going on
Type 29-4C stainless fittings are required for masonry chimney and some roof venting. Orientation and sealing matter, because leaks put flue gas into the building.
Likely causes
- Male end of a fitting facing away from the furnace, so condensate leaks out
- Seam not on top of horizontal sections
- Unsupported long horizontal sections that sag, and unsealed joints
Check in this order
- Use Type 29-4C single wall stainless fittings throughout where stainless venting is called for.
- Install all stainless fittings with the male end toward the furnace.
- Put the seam on top for all horizontal stainless sections.
- Support long horizontal sections to prevent sagging.
- Fasten and seal all pipe joints to prevent flue gas escaping into the building.
- Check for leaks with the furnace running.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
