Replacing the furnace control (memory card)
What is going on
The memory card on the original furnace control holds critical model data. It stays with the furnace, tethered by the plastic wire tie, and it moves to the new board. Never use a control from another furnace, because it can contaminate the system with the wrong model data.
Likely causes
- Furnace control failed and needs replacing
- Board swap where the card is left behind or lost
- Replacement control with dipswitches set differently from the original
- A spare board pulled from another furnace
Check in this order
- Do not cut the plastic wire tie tethering the memory card
- Remove the memory card from the original furnace control and keep it with the furnace
- Insert the memory card into connector P6 on the replacement control
- Match the dipswitch settings of the original control on the replacement
- Do not use a control board from another furnace
- Power off for the whole swap, and use static precautions on the board
- Power up and confirm the furnace runs a normal cycle with no fault code

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
