Button combinations

Key presses that open menus, show readouts or switch modes.

Pushbutton status menu: fault history, CFM, fire rate, unit size, temperature rise

Furnace · R96V/96MDV

One button (S8) on the control cycles through live data on the two seven-segment displays.

  1. Press the button for less than 2 seconds: FL shows followed by up to six stored faults.
  2. Each further short press moves on: AF (target CFM), Fr (0 / Lo / HI), UI (input in kBTU), tr (temperature rise, only with the supply sensor).
  3. Hold 2-5 seconds and release to leave the menu; it also closes after 60 seconds of no presses.

Applies to: (-)96VA040-115 (R96V / U96V) and (-)(-)96MDV040-115 two-stage variable-speed communicating furnaces

Test communication with the LEARN button (RGPE/RGLE)

Furnace · RGPE/RGLE

Holding LEARN makes the green RX LED blink rapidly if the control is trying to communicate. No blinking means communication cannot be established (check wires 1 and 2 at connector J9 are not reversed).

  1. Press and hold the LEARN button for two seconds
  2. Watch the green RX LED: a short burst of rapid blinking = attempting communication
  3. No blinking: check the 1, 2, R and C wiring between furnace, thermostat and condenser

Applies to: Rheem/Ruud RGPE / RGLE modulating furnaces

Service & test modes

Forced fan, low and high fire, test and diagnostic modes, error history and live data.

Extended display mode

Furnace · R96V/96MDV

Pressing the pushbutton while the control powers up switches the displays to extended mode, which changes what is shown during operation.

  1. Cut power to the furnace.
  2. Hold the pushbutton and restore power.
  3. Cycle power again to return to the normal display (the extended-mode table is not readable in the text copy of the manual; see printed p.96).

Force low or high fire for testing (RGPE/RGLE)

Furnace · RGPE/RGLE

Temporarily locks the gas firing rate and blower to low or high for the heat call already running, up to two hours or until the call ends. Will not engage without a heat call.

  1. Start a heat call at the thermostat
  2. Open SETUP in the furnace USER MENU and choose FIXED FIRE RATE
  3. Select low or high; the setting lasts for this heat call (max 2 hours)

Applies to: Rheem/Ruud RGPE / RGLE modulating furnaces

Read or clear the six-fault history from the thermostat (RGPE/RGLE)

Furnace · RGPE/RGLE

The FAULT HISTORY user menu shows the six most recent faults, newest first, with the number of powered days ago. The last item, CLEAR FAULTS (yES / no), wipes the list.

  1. Open the furnace USER MENU at the communicating thermostat and select FAULT HISTORY
  2. Press the down arrow to step to older faults
  3. To erase, go to CLEAR FAULTS and pick yES

Applies to: Rheem/Ruud RGPE / RGLE modulating furnaces

Bypass the 3-minute timer and clear a lockout with TEST (PRL-JEC)

Heat pump · Rheem/Ruud PRL-JEC heat pump (Comfort Control2 ICC)

Pressing TEST resets any active-protection lockout and the 3-minute anti-short-cycle timer, and energizes the unit even without a call. Use an insulated probe.

  1. Use an insulated probe to press TEST for one second, then let go
  2. With a call present the compressor and outdoor fan start and the display settles on c, C, h or H
  3. With no call a steady t shows and the compressor runs about 5 seconds

Applies to: Rheem/Ruud PRL-JEC heat pumps with Comfort Control2 ICC

Force a defrost test (PRL-JEC)

Heat pump · Rheem/Ruud PRL-JEC heat pump (Comfort Control2 ICC)

With the unit running in heat-pump mode, SW2 forces a defrost that runs until the termination temperature is reached or 14 minutes pass.

  1. Set the thermostat to heat and make a heat call
  2. Press SW2 for one second with the unit running in heat-pump mode
  3. Watch the unit enter defrost; press SW2 again to stop the test early

Applies to: Rheem/Ruud PRL-JEC heat pumps with Comfort Control2 ICC

Review or clear stored faults on the ICC display (PRL-JEC)

Heat pump · Rheem/Ruud PRL-JEC heat pump (Comfort Control2 ICC)

Scrolls the stored fault history on the dual display, newest first; up to six are kept and 0 means none. The mode exits by itself after the last fault.

  1. Press TEST and SW2 together with insulated probes for one second and release
  2. Watch the display scroll through the faults, newest first
  3. To erase, hold TEST and SW2 together for five seconds and release; the top and bottom segments flash to confirm

Applies to: Rheem/Ruud PRL-JEC heat pumps with Comfort Control2 ICC

Source: Rheem PRL-JEC Installation Instructions, Comfort Control2 section 12.5, pp.23-24. Written in our own words; check the manual for your exact model.

Reset & cancel

Clearing lockouts, service reminders and fault history; skipping purge or de-air programs.

Clear the fault history

Furnace · R96V/96MDV

Two ways to wipe the six-fault buffer.

  1. With FL showing in the pushbutton menu, hold the button 5 seconds or more; the right display flashes its top and bottom bars three times.
  2. Or flip dipswitch S3-18 off/on three times (or on/off three times) within 30 seconds, then put it back to its original position.
  3. Faults older than 168 powered hours drop out by themselves.

Applies to: (-)96VA040-115 (R96V / U96V) and (-)(-)96MDV040-115 two-stage variable-speed communicating furnaces

Source: Rheem (-)96V / (-)(-)96MDV Installation Instructions 92-24161-124-08, 15 Pushbutton p.96; 12.L p.91. Written in our own words; check the manual for your exact model.

Clearing lockouts

Furnace · R96V/96MDV

Soft lockouts (five-minute pressure switch, one-hour ignition/flame) and hard lockouts clear differently.

  1. Any lockout clears when the cause is fixed and power is cycled off and on.
  2. Soft lockout only: remove the heat call for more than 2 but less than 20 seconds.
  3. Hard lockout from a dead blower (61 four times in one call) clears if you cycle the heat call; a 93 hard lockout does not.
  4. During lockout, cooling and continuous fan still run but the display shows the lockout code instead of C or F.

Applies to: (-)96VA040-115 (R96V / U96V) and (-)(-)96MDV040-115 two-stage variable-speed communicating furnaces

Replay or clear the fault history on power-up (802P / 80MDP / R95P)

Furnace · Rheem/Ruud 802P / 80MDP 80% two-stage furnace (UT 1028-928 IFC), R95P

After a power cycle the seven-segment display replays the three most recent faults under one week old, newest first. An old code does not mean the fault is active now.

  1. Switch furnace power off and back on
  2. Watch the display: up to three stored faults flash, newest first
  3. To wipe the history, flip the fault-clear DIP switch (SW8 on the 802P control, SW4 on R95P) six times in a row, alternating, within 30 seconds, then put it back where it was

Applies to: Rheem/Ruud (-)802P / 80MDP 80% two-stage furnaces; R95P furnaces

Source: Rheem (-)802PA Installation Instructions, Diagnostics and Fault Codes (UT 1028-928 control), pp.40-41; Flame Status LED and Fault Recall (pp.43-44); R95P Fault Recall (printed p.90). Written in our own words; check the manual for your exact model.

Replay or clear the last five faults (RGPE/RGLE)

Furnace · RGPE/RGLE

On a power reset the dual display plays back the last five faults, newest first. Codes 82, 11, 45, 46 and 57 are not stored twice in a row.

  1. Cycle power to the furnace control
  2. Watch the display: the last five faults appear, newest first
  3. To clear, flip DIP switch SW3-2 four times in a row, alternating, within 30 seconds, then return it to its original position; or use CLEAR FAULTS in the thermostat menu

Applies to: Rheem/Ruud RGPE / RGLE modulating furnaces

Reset a soft lockout (R95P)

Furnace · R95P

Soft lockouts can be cleared by cycling the heat call or power. A 1-hour lockout also resets on its own after one hour; a hard lockout (code 93) needs a power reset; code 61 hard lockout can be reset by cycling the heat call.

  1. Cycle the heat call off for 2 to 20 seconds, or cycle power
  2. Code 93 hard lockout: cycle power

Applies to: R95PA040, 060, 070 (1317MSA), R95PA085, 100 (1521MSA), R95PA115 (1524MSA); (-)95P series

Codes look upside down - display orientation switch S1-1

Furnace · R96V/96MDV

The control is used in upflow and downflow cabinets, so the display can be flipped. If a code is not on the list, it is probably being read upside down.

  1. S1-1 OFF = upflow (as shipped), ON = downflow.
  2. Set it to match the furnace position before reading fault codes.

Applies to: (-)96VA040-115 (R96V / U96V) and (-)(-)96MDV040-115 two-stage variable-speed communicating furnaces

Commissioning

Start-up and set-up steps that are easy to miss.

Replacing the furnace control: keep the memory card and copy the dipswitches

Furnace · R96V/96MDV

The model data lives on a memory card tethered to the furnace; the new control is useless without it.

  1. Pull the memory card out of the old control and plug it into P6 of the replacement. Do not cut the plastic tether.
  2. Copy every dipswitch position from the old board to the new one.
  3. Never use a control or card from another furnace, condenser or air handler. A lost card is ordered from ProStock by furnace model and serial number; cycle power after fitting it or the data is not read.

Applies to: (-)96VA040-115 (R96V / U96V) and (-)(-)96MDV040-115 two-stage variable-speed communicating furnaces

Single-stage thermostat on a two-stage furnace: auto staging

Furnace · R96V/96MDV

With only W1 wired, the furnace can step itself up to high fire after a set time.

  1. Set S2-10 / S2-11: OFF-OFF normal two-stage (default); ON-OFF 10 min on low then high; OFF-ON 15 min; ON-ON 20 min.
  2. A W2 call still forces high stage even with auto staging on.
  3. Communicating systems ignore the dipswitches; staging is set at the thermostat.

Applies to: (-)96VA040-115 (R96V / U96V) and (-)(-)96MDV040-115 two-stage variable-speed communicating furnaces
