Blower codes 66, 61 and 60 - what to look for
What is going on
Quick sorting of the three ECM motor codes on the R96V control.
Likely causes
- Restricted or confined ductwork, closed registers (66)
- Loose motor set screw (66)
- Blocked wheel, locked rotor or overheating motor (61)
- Minor internal motor fault (60)
Check in this order
- 66 (overspeed / power limit) only shows in the first three minutes of blower operation: open registers, remove duct restrictions, and check the motor set screw is tight on the shaft.
- 61 (motor cannot run) clear any obstruction from the wheel and find the cause of overheating; if it keeps failing the motor is likely damaged and needs replacing. Four dead-blower events in one heat call put the control in hard lockout.
- 60 (motor able to run) low-level fault, operation continues; no long-term damage expected.
- Static pressure should never exceed 1.0 in. w.c. on this ECM furnace.
Applies to: (-)96VA040-115 (R96V / U96V) and (-)(-)96MDV040-115 two-stage variable-speed communicating furnaces

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
