Annual and start-of-season inspection
What is going on
Recommended inspections by a qualified installer, service agency, or gas supplier. Do the flame, flue, and condensate checks at the start of the heating season and again around mid-season.
Likely causes
- Carbon or scale in heat exchanger tubes
- Flame sensor fouled
- Condensate trap blocked (can cause water backup and nuisance overtemperature trips)
- Illegible furnace markings
Check in this order
- Inspect the flue passageways, vent system, and main burners for corrosion or other deterioration.
- Check main burner flame appearance at start of season and about halfway through the heating season.
- If flames are distorted or there is back pressure, check the vent and inlet air system for blockage.
- If there is carbon and scale in the heat exchanger tubes, replace the heat exchanger assembly.
- Clean the flame sensor with fine steel wool or a Scotch Bright pad.
- Inspect the condensate trap for debris or blockage.
- Replace the condensate neutralizer if used.
- Clean the furnace markings and replace any illegible or missing ones.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority. HVACopedia is not affiliated with any manufacturer; brand and model names only identify the equipment.
