PVC solvent cement joint procedure
What is going on
Cure time varies with fit, temperature and humidity.
Check in this order
- Cut pipe square, remove burrs, chamfer the pipe end, and clean the socket and pipe of dirt, grease, moisture and chips.
- Check fit, then wipe the socket and pipe with cleaner-primer. Coat the socket inside and the pipe outside. Do not let primer dry before cementing.
- Apply a thin coat of cement evenly in the socket. Quickly coat the pipe end heavily, then push it in with a slight twist until it bottoms out.
- Hold the pipe in the fitting for 30 seconds so the tapered socket does not push it out.
- Wipe excess cement from the joint with a rag. Allow 15 minutes before handling.
- Make sure all joints are watertight. Flue condensate is acidic and leaks can damage equipment.
- Use RTV sealant on the first joints from the furnace so they can be removed later without cutting. Support all joints properly.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
