Horizontal left with left vent: trap, plugs and caps
What is going on
These are the opening changes for a left-vent horizontal conversion on the 96V. Make sure the furnace is disconnected from power and gas before you start pulling the trap and plugs, and take care that nothing is left open that should be sealed. A missed plug or cap means a condensate or flue gas leak, so go through the list and tick things off. Keep hose D, since you reuse it, and discard parts only where the step says so.
Likely causes
- Furnace being converted for horizontal left orientation with left-side vent
- Trap and drain parts that must be relocated or capped
- Openings in the flue elbow, top plate and jacket that need correct plugs
- Fresh install where factory configuration is for another orientation
Check in this order
- Make sure power and gas are off before disassembly
- Remove the condensate trap and hoses. Keep hose D. Remove the two trap screws and pull the trap straight out
- Remove the 0.403 in drain plug from the flue elbow and discard it
- Install the intake coupling in the top plate
- Install the 1/2 in yellow vinyl cap in the inducer coupling as shown
- Remove the rectangle flush mount plug from the jacket side and discard it
- Continue with the remaining steps with the furnace in the horizontal left orientation

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
