Horizontal left/right with right vent: remove elbow, trap and factory plugs

96V96MDV

What is going on

First round of work when converting a 96V to horizontal with the vent on the right. Pull parts, keep some, toss some. Keep your pile organized. Elbow and couplings get reused, so do not lose them. Plugs move around, and a missed plug means a leak later.

Likely causes

  • Converting upflow furnace to horizontal left or right with right-side venting
  • Condensate trap and hoses need to come off to change orientation
  • Factory plugs need moving to match the new vent and drain layout
  • Parts bagged and tagged for re-use

Check in this order

  1. Remove the elbow, both couplings and the flue transition. Keep the elbow and couplings
  2. Remove the condensate trap and hoses. Remove the two trap screws and pull the trap straight out. Keep hose D
  3. Install the 2-5/8 in flush mount plug
  4. Remove the left 2-3/8 in flush plug in the blower shelf and discard it
  5. Move the right 2-3/8 in flush mount plug from the blower shelf to the top plate
  6. Move the 0.403 in drain plug from the collector box to its new location
  7. Remove the rectangle flush mount plug and discard it

Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
