Gas valve does not shut off when heat call ends
What is going on
Burners stay lit after the thermostat is turned off.
Likely causes
- W still energized (thermostat or wiring, or thermostat in FAN)
- IFC still powering the gas valve
- Gas valve stuck open
Check in this order
- Warning: If gas will not shut off, close the manual gas valve to the appliance before turning off the electrical supply - risk of explosion or fire.
- Set the thermostat to OFF and confirm W to C is 0 V at the IFC; make sure the thermostat is not in FAN.
- Check for voltage at the gas valve present with W off - check the IFC; absent - replace the gas valve.
- After shutdown confirm the inducer stops after the 10-second post-purge and the blower stops within 3 minutes max; if not, check the IFC.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
