Gas supply piping arrangement at the furnace
What is going on
Gas supply piping at the Rheem 96V/96MDV, per the gas piping figure. Each branch gets a manual shut-off, a union and a drip leg.
Likely causes
- Not a fault call. Piping layout requirement. Missing parts here make service difficult and can let dirt reach the gas valve.
Check in this order
- Install a manual shut-off valve ahead of the furnace so gas can be stopped for service.
- Install a union so the furnace can be disconnected without cutting pipe.
- Install a drip leg (sediment trap) in the piping to catch debris before it reaches the gas valve.
- Keep the arrangement horizontal as shown in the figure.
- Leak test every joint after assembly. Gas piping work belongs to a licensed gas fitter.
- Purge and recheck the connection before lighting the furnace.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
