Furnace location and clearance check before setting in place
What is going on
Confirm the site meets the basic location requirements before the furnace is moved into position.
Check in this order
- Set the furnace as close to the vent run as practical and near the centre of the heat distribution.
- Check that every clearance to the enclosure meets or exceeds the minimums in Table 1 of the manual.
- Leave at least 24 in of front access for service, and make sure any access door or panel can pass the largest component.
- Keep at least 3 in between the furnace front panel and any closed door or panel.
- Keep combustion and ventilation openings unobstructed. For outside air, set the openings at least 12 in above the highest snow level.
- Leave height in the supply plenum for a cooling coil if the coil is not yet installed.
- Protect electrical components from water.
- In a residential garage, mount burners and ignition at least 18 in above the floor and protect the unit from vehicle damage.
- Set the furnace level. Only a slight lean left or forward (upflow) or slight forward lean (horizontal) is allowed, for condensate drainage.
Applies to: UH1/DH1 upflow, downflow and horizontal furnaces

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority. HVACopedia is not affiliated with any manufacturer; brand and model names only identify the equipment.
