Field conversion: upflow with left side vent

96V96MDV

What is going on

Converts the furnace from the as-shipped upflow configuration to upflow with left side vent. Tools: electric drill, 1/8" drill bit, pliers, flat-head screwdriver, 5/16" and 1/4" hex drivers, tubing cutter, soapy water for hose assembly. Parts come from the parts bag and conversion kit RXGY-CK. Discard the flue transition, transition coupling and elbow. Retain the IDB coupling.

Check in this order

  1. Remove the flue transition, transition coupling and elbow. Remove the inducer coupling with its elbow for easier removal. Retain the IDB coupling and reinstall it with the exhaust-flow arrow pointing the right way.
  2. Remove the 3-3/8" flush mount plug from the jacket and discard it.
  3. Move the 2-3/8" flush mount plug from the jacket to the top plate.
  4. Install the 2-5/8" flush mount plug in the top plate.
  5. Install the 2" pipe grommet.
  6. Install the intake coupling with its nut.
  7. Pick the right or left condensate drain option. Remove the 7/8" plug from the jacket side and discard it. Drill two 1/8" holes for the condensate drain coupling.
  8. Install the condensate drain coupling with two #8 x 1/2" screws. Put the barbed fitting into the vestibule.
  9. Left drain attach hose A (pre-installed) to the condensate drain coupling and clamp it.
  10. Right drain cut tube C to the cabinet width, attach hose A and tube C with a clamp, then attach tube C to the drain coupling and clamp it.
  11. Install the air diffuser in the intake coupling until the tabs seat.
  12. Verify all hoses are secure and free of kinks, all drain ports are plugged, heat tape is installed if required, and both worm drives on the IDB coupling clamps are tight.
  13. Confirm the unit has forward pitch and all clamps and couplings are tight.

Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
