Field conversion: downflow zero-clearance
What is going on
Converts the furnace to downflow zero-clearance. Requires parts from the parts bag, conversion kit RXGY-CK and zero-clearance kit RXGY-ZK. Tools include an electric drill, 3/16" and 1/8" bits, pliers, flat-head screwdriver, 1/4" and 5/16" hex drivers, tubing cutter, PVC glue and primer and a hammer. Steps 1 to 4 are shown with the furnace in the as-shipped condition. Source page text is partly jumbled.
Check in this order
- Remove the elbow, both couplings and the flue transition. Retain the elbow and couplings for later use. Remove the coupling on the inducer with the elbow for easier removal.
- Remove the trap and hoses. Remove the two screws and pull the trap straight out. Retain hose D.
- Install the 2-5/8" flush mount plug.
- Remove the left 2-3/8" flush plug in the blower shelf and discard it.
- Move the right 2-3/8" flush mount plug from the blower shelf to the top plate.
- Move the .403" drain plug in the collector box.
- Follow the remaining zero-clearance steps for pipe assembly and collar gasket installation as shown in the kit drawings, using the parts listed for RXGY-ZK.
Applies to: 96V and 96MDV downflow zero-clearance conversion

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
