Direct vent termination clearances (key limits)

96V

What is going on

Clearances come from Figure 32 and its footnotes. The figure text is jumbled in the source, so verify every value against the full figure before installing. The points below are the ones that are clearly stated.

Check in this order

  1. Keep the vent terminal at least 7 ft (2.1 m) above a paved sidewalk or paved driveway on public property.
  2. Do not terminate under a veranda, porch, deck or balcony unless it is fully open on a minimum of two sides beneath the floor. The manual recommends avoiding this location if possible.
  3. Keep the minimum clearance above grade, veranda, porch, deck or balcony as shown in Figure 32 for the appliance input rating.
  4. Keep clearances to windows, doors, soffits and corners as shown in Figure 32.
  5. For clearances not listed in ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54 or CSA B149.1, follow local codes and the gas supplier's requirements.

Applies to: Direct vent terminations, U.S. and Canadian installations

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority. HVACopedia is not affiliated with any manufacturer; brand and model names only identify the equipment.
