Direct vent: standard vertical termination (Option 1)

96V96MDV

What is going on

Standard vertical direct vent termination, Option 1 in the Rheem 96V/96MDV instructions. The big thing is keeping the intake and the vent apart so the furnace doesn't breathe its own exhaust. Keep 12 in of vertical separation, and if you run 3 in pipe, step down to 2 in before the roof.

Likely causes

  • Not a fault call. Termination dimensions for Option 1 vertical direct vent.

Check in this order

  1. Keep 12 in vertical separation between the combustion air intake and the vent.
  2. If using 3 in pipe, reduce both the intake and exhaust pipes to 2 in before the roof penetration.
  3. Follow Figure 23 for the roof penetration detail.
  4. Flash and seal the roof penetration so water stays out.
  5. Support the pipes and check for the proper slope back to the furnace.
