Carbon monoxide detectors and signage for Massachusetts side-wall venting
What is going on
Side-wall horizontal venting where the exhaust terminal is under 7 ft above grade needs CO detectors and signage.
Check in this order
- Confirm a hard-wired CO detector with alarm and battery backup is installed on the floor level where the appliance is installed.
- Confirm a battery or hard-wired CO detector with alarm is installed on each additional level served.
- If the appliance is in a crawl space or attic, the detector may go on the next adjacent floor level.
- If the detectors cannot be completed at install, allow 30 days for the owner to comply, with a battery-operated CO detector installed in the meantime.
- Install a metal or plastic sign at least 8 ft above grade directly in line with the exhaust terminal, with lettering at least 1/2 in high that reads: GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW, KEEP CLEAR OF ALL OBSTRUCTIONS.
- Leave the venting kit installation instructions with the appliance when BAYAIR30AVENTA or BAYVENT200B is used.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
