Noisy compressor or loud defrost shift - Carrier split systems
What is going on
Gurgling, rattling, hard starts, whistles or loud swoosh/groan when shifting in and out of defrost.
Likely causes
- Liquid floodback
- Loose hardware or grommets
- Off-cycle refrigerant migration
- Charge issue or rigid tubing contact
- Partial restriction or leak path
- Pressure differential at defrost shift
Check in this order
- Gurgle with zero superheat check indoor blower, dirty coils and airflow.
- Rattle tighten panels and check compressor grommets (split-post grommets KA75UG100 can help).
- Hard start that clears suspect migration; verify charge and add a crankcase heater.
- Vibration through the structure insulate tubing at penetrations; add a suction loop for a resonating 'waa-waa' sound.
- Whistle in operation suggests a partial blockage; whistle at shutdown suggests a leak path while pressures equalize.
- For defrost noise enable Quiet Shift or Quiet Shift-2 and check the defrost sensor; rattles under 60 s at shift are usually pressure differential.

Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
