Vent piping cement and solvent safety
What is going on
PVC and ABS solvent cement burns and the vapors hurt. Treat it with respect. Follow the pipe maker's directions for cut, clean and cement.
Likely causes
- Cement used near sparks, open flame or heat
- Poor ventilation while gluing in a closed space
- Skin or eye contact with cement or primer
Check in this order
- Keep solvent cement away from sparks, open flames and excessive heat.
- Avoid breathing cement vapor, and work with some ventilation.
- Avoid skin or eye contact, and wear gloves.
- Follow the pipe maker's instructions for cutting, cleaning and cementing.
- Let joints cure fully before firing the furnace.
Applies to: PVC and ABS vent piping

- Alternate vent/flue location (upflow or horizontal left)
- Annual inspection checklist
- Auxiliary limit control (location and purpose)

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
