Annual inspection checklist
What is going on
The furnace should be inspected by a qualified installer or service agency at least once a year, at the start of the heating season. Check the flue, combustion air intake, heat exchanger, burners, drainage, wiring and filters.
Check in this order
- Check the flue pipe for blockage or leakage, including the outside termination and connections at the furnace.
- Check the combustion air intake pipe (where used) for blockage or leakage, including its termination and connection.
- Check the heat exchanger passages for corrosion or buildup.
- Check the burners for proper ignition, burner flame and flame sense.
- Check the drainage system and hose connections for blockage or leakage.
- Check electrical connections for tightness and corrosion, and check wires for damage.
- Check and replace the air filter.
Applies to: All 34.5in chassis gas furnaces
More furnace guides
- Airflow lower than demanded, furnace runs on low stage when high stage is expected
- Alternate combustion air opening (upflow or horizontal)
- Alternate vent/flue location (upflow or horizontal left)
- Auxiliary limit control (location and purpose)
- Auxiliary limit switch open (blower compartment)
- Blower motor does not have enough information, fails to start 40 consecutive times

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority. HVACopedia is not affiliated with any manufacturer; brand and model names only identify the equipment.
