Check flame rollout switch
What is going on
Manual reset rollout switch on the burner bracket. It opens on flame rollout, flame impingement on the heat shield or over-firing. The blower runs continuously when it opens.
Likely causes
- Flame impingement on heat shield
- Orifice plate out of position
- Burners with excessive cross-over slot dimension
- Over-firing
- Improper orifices or gas pressure
- Air leaking around or through the heat exchanger into the burner compartment
Check in this order
- Shut off power and remove the burner compartment door.
- Press the manual reset on the rollout switch.
- Remove the wires from the switch.
- Check continuity across the switch with an ohmmeter.
- If it will not close after reset, replace it.
- Find and correct the cause of the trip before returning to service.
- Reinstall the burner door and verify operation.
Applies to: 90% upflow and counterflow furnaces

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority. HVACopedia is not affiliated with any manufacturer; brand and model names only identify the equipment.
