Canadian vent system requirements
What is going on
Canadian installs must follow CAN/CSA B149.1-15. All vent parts, primer and cement must be ULC S636 listed and match one manufacturer's system.
Likely causes
- Mixing primer or cement from different vent manufacturers
Check in this order
- Confirm all pipe and fittings are marked ULC S636.
- For Royal Pipe System 636, use GVS-65 Primer (purple) and GVS-65 PVC Solvent Cement.
- For IPEX System 636, use PVC/CPVC primer (purple or clear) and PVC Solvent Cement (gray).
- Do not use primer or cement near ignition sources or past its expiration date.
- Use UL listed fire stops and roof flashings.
- Have the vent system checked once a year by qualified service personnel.
- Confirm permit requirements with the local authority having jurisdiction before installing.
Applies to: Canadian installations

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority. HVACopedia is not affiliated with any manufacturer; brand and model names only identify the equipment.
