Annual planned service inspection
What is going on
Items a service technician should check during the yearly inspection. Shut off power to the unit first.
Check in this order
- Check that fresh air grilles and louvers on the unit and in the room are open and unobstructed.
- Inspect the burners for rust, dirt or signs of water.
- Inspect the vent pipe for water, cracks, damage, sagging or disconnected joints.
- Inspect the unit appearance for rust, dirt, water, and burnt or damaged wires or components.
- Confirm the blower access door is in place and seals the return air from the room.
- Confirm the return air duct is attached and sealed to the unit.
- Observe unit operation to check performance of the unit and the vent system.
- Analyze flue gases and compare them to the unit specifications.
- Shut the furnace down temporarily if problems found cannot be fixed right away.
- Tell the homeowner to keep items away from the furnace so the combustion air supply is not blocked.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
