Napoleon · Gas fireplace troubleshooting
White or grey film on glass, logs or firebox
What is going on
A white/grey haze builds up on the glass and inside surfaces. This is sulphur from the fuel depositing on the surfaces.
Likely causes
- Sulphur in the gas depositing on glass, logs and firebox surfaces
Check in this order
- Let the unit cool fully - never clean the glass while it is hot.
- Clean the glass with a cleaner made for gas fireplace glass.
- Tell the owner to clean the glass regularly; deposits left too long can permanently mark the glass.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
