Complete unit shutdown - natural vent / vent-free
What is going on
Unit shuts down; flame goes blue/ghostly before going out.
Likely causes
- Natural vent: venting outside spec
- Vent-free: catalytic door intakes blocked, loose connections, bad operator coil, pressure drop, room too small
Check in this order
- If the flame does not go blue first, use the Pilot Failure guide.
- Natural vent check venting against the installation manual and local code and correct.
- Vent-free with catalytic door make sure its air intakes are not blocked or covered.
- Vent-free clean/tighten thermopile, switch, remote and thermostat connections; test the operator coil.
- Vent-free if the flame shrinks after lighting, check pressure drop on activation.
- WARNING (vent-free) confirm the room volume meets combustion/ventilation air requirements; add room air or relocate.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
