Wall switch OFF but main burner comes on when gas knob turned ON

What is going on

Main burner lights from the knob alone even though the remote wall switch is off.

Likely causes

  • Wall switch mounted upside down
  • Wall switch grounding (shorted)
  • Wall switch wire grounding (shorted)
  • Faulty valve

Check in this order

  1. Check switch orientation - if mounted upside down, reverse it.
  2. Check the switch for a ground/short; replace the switch if shorted.
  3. Check the switch wire for a ground/short; repair the short or replace the wire.
  4. If switch and wiring are good, replace the gas valve.
