Test: spill switch and wall switch/thermostat wiring
What is going on
Isolate a bad switch from bad wiring, and check spill switch continuity.
Likely causes
- Failed spill switch
- Failed wall switch/thermostat
- Damaged wiring
Check in this order
- Spill switch disconnect all wires, meter on ohms across the two spade terminals; the manual says replace the switch if it reads 1 ohm or higher.
- Wall switch/thermostat with switch leads on valve terminals 1 & 3 (top and bottom), disconnect the leads at the switch end and join them together.
- Turn the valve on - if the burner lights, the wiring is good and the switch is faulty.
- Warning: a spill switch / vent safety switch may be bypassed only temporarily for testing - it is illegal to leave it bypassed. Restore before leaving.
Applies to: Napoleon gas fireplaces (spill switch applies to natural-vent units)

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
