Test: door gasket seal (paper test)

What is going on

Quick check of door gasket sealing.

Likely causes

  • Worn/damaged door gasket or latch

Check in this order

  1. Place a 1" x 6" strip of paper between the door and fireplace body, close and latch the door.
  2. Pull the paper - if it tears rather than slipping out, the seal is good; if it slides out, inspect door, gasket and latch.
  3. Repeat at several positions around the frame.
  4. Look for an even colour line on the firebox opening where the gasket presses; it should not extend past the gasket perimeter.
