Napoleon · Gas fireplace troubleshooting
Pilot will not light
What is going on
No pilot ignition when the piezo push button is pressed.
Likely causes
- No spark at the pilot (ignitor, wire or electrode problem)
- Propane tank empty
- Incorrect spark gap
- No gas reaching the pilot
Check in this order
- Try lighting the pilot with a match to separate a spark problem from a gas problem.
- Confirm the electrode wire is connected to the push-button ignitor and the ignitor is tight; replace the wire if insulation is broken or frayed.
- Replace the electrode if its ceramic insulator is cracked or broken; replace the push-button ignitor if still no spark.
- Set spark gap to 0.150"-0.175" (approx. 5/32"-11/64") between electrode tip and pilot burner; tighten the securing nut finger-tight plus 1/4 turn.
- Propane units check the tank and refill if empty.
- No gas at pilot confirm the manual shutoff valve is on, check the pilot orifice for blockage, then replace the valve or call the gas supplier.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
