Pilot will not light (service flowchart)
What is going on
Step-by-step check when the pilot will not ignite. Same flowchart for direct vent, natural vent and vent-free units.
Likely causes
- No spark / loose electrode wire
- Low supply pressure
- Pilot adjustment screw closed
- Electrode gap too wide
- Blocked pilot orifice or tube
- Loose fittings or kinked/leaking pilot tube
- Blocked pilot primary air opening
- Damaged electrode
Check in this order
- Press the igniter and confirm a spark at the electrode; if none, secure or replace the electrode wire connection.
- Test the inline gas pressure to confirm enough supply pressure for ignition.
- Make sure the pilot adjustment screw has not been turned fully closed; adjust as needed.
- Set the electrode-to-pilot-hood gap to no more than 1/8".
- Remove the pilot tube and orifice and clean out any packed debris.
- Tighten the pilot tube fittings; WARNING: leak-test after.
- Un-kink the pilot tube or replace it if leaking.
- Clear the primary air opening on the pilot assembly.
- Replace the electrode if chipped or broken.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
