Napoleon · Gas fireplace troubleshooting
Pilot goes out when the gas knob is released
What is going on
Pilot lights but will not stay lit after the knob is let go. Note: the valve has an interlock that will not let the pilot relight until the thermocouple cools - wait about 60 seconds between attempts.
Likely causes
- Gas line not purged (air in line)
- Propane tank empty
- Pilot flame too small
- Pilot flame not wrapping the thermocouple
- Thermocouple shorted or faulty
- Faulty gas valve
Check in this order
- Before troubleshooting, purge the gas line and do the first light-up of pilot and main burner with the glass door open.
- Wait about 60 seconds after a failed attempt so the thermocouple cools and the interlock releases.
- Propane units confirm the tank has gas; refill if empty.
- Turn up the pilot flame with the pilot adjustment screw if it is too small.
- Gently twist the pilot head so the flame properly engulfs the thermocouple.
- Loosen and re-tighten the thermocouple at the valve; clean the thermocouple and valve connection.
- If it still drops out, replace the thermocouple. WARNING: use only the fast-acting thermocouple supplied by Wolf Steel - it is a safety component.
- If a new thermocouple does not fix it, replace the gas valve.
