Napoleon · Gas fireplace troubleshooting
Pilot drops out during operation - vent-free
What is going on
Pilot fails while running on a vent-free unit - ODS may be sensing low oxygen.
Likely causes
- Wrong pilot flame
- Pressure drop
- Low thermocouple output
- Weak magnet coil
- Inlet pressure too high/low
- Dirty ODS air opening
- Room too small (not enough unconfined space)
- Logs out of place
Check in this order
- Check pilot flame pattern, size and position.
- Check for pressure drop when the burner is activated.
- Test thermocouple millivolts and the magnet coil.
- Test inline pressure - too high pushes the pilot past the thermopile; too low prevents lighting.
- Clean dirt/debris from the ODS primary air opening.
- Warning: confirm the room meets the unit's minimum unconfined-space requirement; add make-up air if not.
- Check log positions.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
