Napoleon · Gas fireplace troubleshooting
Main burner flame is blue, lazy and transparent
What is going on
Flame looks ghostly blue and see-through - a sign the burner is starved of combustion air / flue gases are recirculating.
Likely causes
- Blocked vent or terminal (including ice on the terminal in very cold weather)
- Incorrect vent installation - storm collars in the wrong place
Check in this order
- Warning: a ghostly blue flame means poor venting - shut the unit down until the vent is cleared.
- Inspect the vent and termination and remove any blockage.
- In very cold weather check for ice on the terminal and remove it as needed.
- Check storm collar location against the installation manual diagram (Figure 13) and correct it.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
