HSI fireplace: flame comes on but will not stay lit
What is going on
The burner lights on a hot surface ignition unit but drops out.
Likely causes
- Junction box or module not grounded
- Reversed polarity
- Ignitor/sensor not in the flame
Check in this order
- Ground the junction box and the module if either is not grounded.
- Check polarity meter from 120 VAC HOT on the module to ground should read 110/120 VAC; from 120 VAC RTN to ground should read 0 V. If reversed, shut off power and swap hot and neutral at the junction box.
- Reposition the ignitor bracket so the ignitor is in the flames over the port holes.

Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
