DSI fireplace: ignitor will not spark
What is going on
Heat-N-Glo direct spark ignition fireplace: no spark at the electrode when the fireplace is switched on.
Likely causes
- No 110/120 VAC at the junction box REM receptacle (breaker or wiring)
- On/Off rocker or wall switch fault
- Ignitor cable (gray or orange) loose or disconnected
- Open or failed high-temperature limit switch
- No 24 VAC from the transformer (Fenwal 24 V systems)
- Failed module or ignitor
Check in this order
- Warning: Disconnect 110/120 VAC before checking wire connections or changing parts.
- Check for 110/120 VAC at the REM receptacle on the junction box; if none, check the breaker and junction box wiring.
- RAM 1MC1, CFX-DA, Grand-50-C if the LED is flashing, the fault is the module or ignitor; make sure the gray ignitor cable is tight. Two flashes = 5-minute lockout, reset the switch or breaker.
- Switch ON black wire on the switch to module On/Off pin (yellow) should read 110/120 VAC, and AC HOT to AC RTN at the module 110/120 VAC. Voltage present but no spark = replace the module.
- RAM-1-RS make sure the orange ignitor wire is connected on top of the module; with the switch ON there should be 110/120 VAC between 120 VAC RTN and 120 VAC HOT. Voltage present: replace the module; if still no spark, replace the ignitor.
- Fenwal 24 V: transformer terminals 4 and 5 should read 24 VAC (if not, replace the transformer); then 24 VAC between V1 and V2 wires to the module, and the orange electrode wire connected. Replace the spark electrode if all of that is good.
- High-temperature limit switch (only some units): on the RAM 1MC1 and Fenwal units the guide describes it as normally open and says to replace it if it shows continuity. Check the wiring diagram for your unit before judging the switch.
Applies to: Heat-N-Glo DSI fireplaces: RAM 1MC1-01/-05 (incl. Robertshaw valve), RAM-1-RS, Fenwal 24 VAC (Triton 2460D), CFX-DA, Grand-50-C
