Heat pump heat with electric backup stages
What happens, in order
- Thermostat set to heat reversing valve stays de-energized
- First stage call 24 V to Y at the outdoor unit and G at the blower board
- Heat pump starts; blower starts after the 7 s on delay
- If the heat pump cannot keep up, W2 energizes the heat sequencer HR1 and element 1 (and 2) come on 10 to 20 s later
- If still short, W3 energizes HR2 for elements 3 and 4
- When demand is met, elements drop out (sequencer contacts open 30 to 70 s after power is removed)
- Heat pump stops and the blower stops after the 65 s off delay

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
