Communicating defrost and forced defrost

Goodman ComfortNet communicating heat pump

What happens, in order

  1. Heat pump runs in heating
  2. Coil temperature below about 31 F UC board accumulates compressor run time
  3. When run time reaches the dip-switch interval and heat is called, defrost starts
  4. UC control turns the condenser fan off and energizes the reversing valve; compressor may pause briefly during the valve shift (delay is adjustable)
  5. Compressor restarts at high stage
  6. Air handler is asked to run the electric heat and blower at defrost speed
  7. Defrost ends at about 75 F coil temperature or after 10 min maximum, whichever comes first; timer resets
  8. System goes back to the heating mode it was in
  9. Service test press TEST and RECALL together on the UC board to force defrost

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
