Sooting or flame too blue - Lennox Elite LDV

Lennox Elite Linear View LDV42/LDV54

What is going on

Long orange flames with black tips and soot on the glass or near the vent cap, or flames that stay blue and see-through.

Likely causes

  • Air shutter closed too far (soot)
  • Air shutter open too far (blue flame)
  • Flames hitting the panels
  • Vent run with many offsets

Check in this order

  1. Safety air shutter adjustment by a qualified tech only. Glass door must be on and sealed. The lever and nearby surfaces are hot.
  2. Run the burner at least 30 minutes before judging. A new fire starts blue and turns yellow-orange.
  3. If sooting, first check the flames are not touching the panels and the media is placed right.
  4. Lever is on the lower right below the door (remove the surround for easier access). Push in = more air (more open). Pull out = less air.
  5. Sooting or orange flame open the shutter a bit. Flame stays blue: close it a bit. Run a few minutes and check again.
  6. More offsets in the vent usually need a wider shutter opening. Propane flames that candle or look stringy also need more air.
