Millivolt: lighting the pilot
What happens, in order
- Smell for gas around the unit first; stop if gas is present
- Gas control knob pushed in and turned to PILOT
- Knob held fully in; gas flows to the pilot only
- Piezo igniter clicked until the pilot lights
- Pilot flame heats the thermocouple, which holds the safety magnet open
- Knob held a few seconds then released
- If the pilot stays lit, ready for the main burner
- If the pilot goes out, repeat from the start; the valve will not re-light until the magnet has dropped

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
