Inform the user after service
What is going on
After a service call I always sit down with the owner for a few minutes. Most of the nuisance calls I got on boilers came from people who did not know the pressure needs watching or who started fiddling with settings. A short talk and the manual left beside the unit saves a lot of trips.
Likely causes
- Owner unsure what was changed during the service
- System pressure drifting low with nobody watching the gauge
- Owner or handyman adjusting the combustion system
Check in this order
- Explain any changes, adjustments or replacements to the user.
- Confirm the user understands how the system works.
- Leave the instructions near the unit.
- Ask the user to check system water pressure regularly and restore it if needed.
- Ask the user to have the system serviced at regular intervals.
- Tell the user never to service the boiler or adjust the combustion system themselves.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
