Heat pump: cooling cycle

N4H3

What happens, in order

  1. On a call for cooling the thermostat makes R-O, R-Y and R-G
  2. R-O energizes the reversing valve into cooling position
  3. R-Y energizes the contactor, starting outdoor fan and compressor
  4. R-G energizes the indoor blower relay, starting the blower
  5. Thermostat satisfied contactor and blower relay drop out and compressor and motors stop; an indoor time-delay relay, if fitted, keeps the blower running a while longer (cooling and heating)

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
