Operating limits and compressor protections

IDS LightPremium Connected

What happens, in order

  1. Outdoor coil (T3) at or above 147.2F (Light) / 150F (Premium Connected): compressor off; restarts when below 133F
  2. Cooling allowed from 40F up to 120F outdoor on Light (15F to 125F on Premium Connected)
  3. Heating allowed from 3F up to 86F on Light (-4F to 86F on Premium Connected); below 1.4F (Light) or -4F (Premium Connected) the outdoor unit calls the indoor electric heat
  4. Discharge temperature above 230F compressor stops; restarts below 185F
  5. High pressure switch opens above 580 psig: compressor and outdoor fan stop; they restart when it recloses below 435 psig
  6. Low pressure below about 22 psig for 3 s in cooling (Premium Connected also below 10.2 psig in heating): compressor and fan stop and the system tries again after 6 minutes
  7. Low discharge superheat below 9F for 40 minutes is also a protection
  8. Five P21 protections within 100 minutes lock the system out

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
