Rheem · Heat pump troubleshooting
Outdoor unit will not run
What is going on
Electrical checks for a heat pump that does not start.
Likely causes
- Power off or loose connections
- Blown fuse/tripped breaker
- No thermostat call (Y1 LED off)
- Lockout active
- Anti-short-cycle delay
- Defective transformer
- HPC open
- Comm wires reversed (comm LED solid)
Check in this order
- Warning: Disconnect all power before servicing.
- Is the 7-segment lit? If not, check R-C 24VAC and the 3A ICC fuse.
- Flashing mode letter = anti-short-cycle delay; wait or press TEST.
- Alternating L and a number = lockout; read fault history and fix cause.
- Y1 red LED off = no call: check thermostat and control wiring (24V) or comm wiring (communicating).
- Check line voltage at disconnect and ICC; check breaker/fuses.
- Comm systems solid comm LED means reversed comm wires or term/bus switch issue.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority. HVACopedia is not affiliated with any manufacturer; brand and model names only identify the equipment.
