Outdoor fan runs but compressor does not
What is going on
Compressor fails to start while the outdoor fan runs.
Likely causes
- Bad run or start capacitor
- Bad start relay
- Loose connection
- Compressor stuck, grounded, open winding or open internal overload
- Low voltage
Check in this order
- Check run/start capacitors and the start relay; replace faulty parts.
- Check voltage at the compressor and tighten connections.
- If the internal overload is open, wait at least 2 hours for it to reset before condemning the compressor.
- Check winding resistance and to ground.
- Low voltage correct supply; start kit components are factory installed.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
