No electric heat - R-32 air handler heat kit
What is going on
Heat strips do not come on during an auxiliary/emergency heat call.
Likely causes
- No line voltage to the air handler or heat kit
- Transformer failure
- No W signal from the thermostat
- Contactor/sequencer not closing
- Open fusible link
- Open heater element
- Open limit switch
Check in this order
- Check 240 V at the air handler panel; if missing check breakers or fuses and the wiring.
- Check 24 V at the transformer secondary; replace the transformer if missing.
- Check 24 V on W at the heat contactor; none = thermostat or wiring.
- Confirm the contactor(s) close; replace if not. Check line voltage at the contactor(s).
- Power off check each fusible link (opens at about 333 F) - find why it opened before replacing; never bypass.
- Ohm each heat element; replace open elements.
- Check limit switches (open at about 150 F); replace an open limit and look for low airflow.

For licensed technicians. Gas, electrical and refrigerant work must be done by a qualified, licensed person. Shut off power and gas before servicing, never bypass a safety control, and follow the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model; it and local codes always take priority.
