05 Open circuit - compressor will not run

High severity Rheem/Ruud PRL-JEC heat pump (Comfort Control2 ICC)

What the control is telling you

There is a call for the compressor but no current in either the start or run winding circuits, or a protector trip has lasted more than 4 hours. The ICC retries every 5 minutes for 4 tries, then every 20 minutes for up to 4 hours. Reported as 5 flashes on the L terminal.

Applies to: (-)PRL-JEC 2-stage 16 SEER heat pumps: RPRL/UPRL-024JEC, -036JEC, -048JEC, -060JEC

Likely causes

  • Compressor internal protector open
  • Damaged, wrong or miswired run capacitor
  • Broken wire, loose connector or miswired compressor
  • Open compressor winding

Test and repair steps

  1. Check for an open compressor internal protector (let the compressor cool; can take up to 2 hours).
  2. Check the run capacitor for damage, wrong value or miswiring.
  3. Check for broken wires, loose connectors or a miswired compressor.
  4. Check compressor windings for continuity.
  5. Verify line voltage reaches the compressor through the ICC compressor relay (K2).
